Brazilian surfer Maya Gabeira set a world record for the largest-ever wave surfed by a woman earlier this year.
The 31-year-old rode a 20.72 meter wave in January off the coast of Nazaré, Portugal. The record was confirmed in October, and Gabeira received a Guinness World Record certificate and the first-ever World Surf League’s Women’s XXL Biggest Wave Award.
In the past, the World Surf League and Guinness World Records only had a single biggest-wave surfing award, which has always been won by men. But this year they added a women's only award.
“To set the world record has been a dream of mine for many years,” said Gabeira. She adds there have been times when it looked like she would never achieve this dream.
In 2013, she was knocked off her board and nearly drowned while trying to ride a giant wave in Nazaré.
Gabeira wasn't sure if she'd ever surf again. But after recovering from her injuries, she decided to move to Nazaré – determined to set the biggest-wave record.
Some of the largest waves in the world are found off the coast of Nazaré. In April 2018, Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa set a world record there for the largest wave ever surfed at 24.38 meters.
