While Japan is going on to the quarterfinals, this is only the second time that Scotland will have gone home from the Rugby World Cup without making it through. It was a loss to Scotland that stopped Japan from getting to the quarterfinals at the last World Cup four years ago.
The result also means that Ireland came second in Pool A and will go on to play defending champions, New Zealand's All Blacks, next week.
