Most Americans would fail the US citizenship test if they had to take it. According to a recent survey, just one in three Americans could pass an exam which has questions taken from the US citizenship test. The test isn't particularly difficult, but a score of at least 60 percent is needed to pass.
Almost three quarters of those who took the test couldn't name the 13 original colonies of the US, 57 percent couldn't say how many judges there are on the Supreme Court, and 60 percent didn't know which countries the US fought during World War II.
“It really becomes troublesome," says Patrick Riccards of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation. "It points to a real need to ... look at how we are teaching and learning history in this country, and what we can do to make history more interesting … for today’s students.”
Forty percent of people who took the test said that history was their favorite subject when they were in school.
Senior citizens achieved the highest scores, with 74 percent of people over 65 answering at least six out of 10 questions correctly. But only 19 percent of people under the age of 45 passed the exam.
The Woodrow Wilson Foundation says it's working with history teachers across the country to make the subject more interesting.
Democracy doesn't work at its best unless citizens are informed, says Riccards.
“If we want individuals to be strong, contributing citizens," says Riccards, "then we believe that they need to know that history, so that they’re having informed discussions and they’re making informed decisions.”
