(Part 1） The Federal Trade Commission has called for legislation to protect the privacy of children using the Internet.
The commission recommended that commercial concerns possessing Web sites should disclose how personal data would be used and whether it could be passed on.
In the first instance, the commission wants a law that would require companies to ensure that a child under 12 had an adult's permission before disclosing personal details.
(Part 2) The U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly to adopt an amendment designed to protect children from exposure to pornographic material on the Internet.
Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., who proposed the amendment, has previously advocated fines and criminal penalties for pornographic Web sites. "The most precious commodity in our society is the innocence and welfare of our children," Coats said.

Japan launched its first Mars probe early Saturday on a mission to investigate the atmosphere of the planet and its interaction with solar winds.
A large solid fuel M-5 rocket carrying the Planet-B spacecraft, which was later named Nozomi (Hope), lifted off from the Kagoshima Space Center at 3:12 a.m.
The Education Ministry's Institute of Space and Astronautical Science reported that Nozomi detached from the M-5 rocket and was placed into Earth's orbit.
According to Koichiro Tsuruta, a professor at the Institute, the probe to Mars has completed only 30 percent of the entire exploration mission. "We have a long way to go. There are many hurdles to overcome," he said.
