More Americans are moving to smaller cities in search of a better life. They're leaving places like Los Angeles, Chicago and New York for cities such as Phoenix and Las Vegas, according to the US Census Bureau.
One of the main reasons people move to smaller cities is more affordable housing. According to the Census Bureau, more than half of the people who move do so for housing-related reasons. They're looking for a new or better home, cheaper housing, or want to buy a home rather than rent.
The US Census Bureau reports that housing in smaller cities is about two times cheaper than in the largest metropolitan areas in the US.
On average, it costs $4,100 （45万円）a month to rent a place in Manhattan. This means that the average New York City household has to spend almost two thirds of its income on rent. In Las Vegas, however, the average person would only have to spend 21 percent of their income on rent. The average New York City home costs $1.1 million（1億2100万円）, while in Las Vegas, the average house costs $273,000.（3003万円）
More than half a million people left New York between 2012 and 2017. The situation in Los Angeles is not much different. LA County lost about 381,000 people over the same five-year period.
That does not, however, mean that the population of the biggest US cities is on the decline. In fact, the country's biggest cities are still growing because of births and immigration.
