Typhoon Hagibis Cancels Rugby World Cup Matches
Rugby World Cup organizers have canceled two games because of Typhoon Hagibis, due to hit Japan this weekend. This is the first time Rugby World Cup matches have ever been canceled.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that Typhoon Hagibis may bring torrential rain and strong winds to central parts of the country across Saturday and Sunday, and told people to take precautions against what may be the most destructive typhoon of 2019.
The canceled games, which had been scheduled for Saturday, October 12, would have been between England and France in Yokohama and New Zealand and Italy in the city of Toyota.
Tournament director Alan Gilpin said organizers looked at all options to let the games go ahead, including moving matches to other venues, but this wasn't possible.
Games that are canceled because of the weather will be logged as having no score, but each team will get two competition points.
Italy needs more points than that to go to the next stage of the tournament, so it is now out of the World Cup.
The canceled games also mean that England is finishing at the top of its pool, ahead of France, even though both teams have won every match they played.
World Cup organizers will wait until Sunday to decide whether or not to cancel the match between Japan and Scotland in Yokohama. If Sunday's match is canceled, Japan will automatically go through to the quarterfinals for the first time.
Japan has won every match in its pool so far, including against Ireland – ranked one of the top teams in the world. Japanese player Yu Tamura has also scored the most points of any player in the competition so far, with 40 points across three games.
